G-Dragon Became First Idol to Reject Fan Gifts “Meaning Behind His Anti-Drug Foundation”

A recent YouTube Shorts video highlighting this has gone viral among netizens. The clip reveals that back in August 2011, G-Dragon posted a handwritten letter on his SNS, stating he would respectfully decline fan gifts for his birthday. This marked the first time an idol made such a declaration. His message read, “There’s something I’d like to carefully ask of you. For this birthday, I will politely not accept any presents. Your warm hearts alone are more than enough, so please celebrate with lots of love instead. I hope from now on, rather than just receiving, we can make meaningful memories together on such special days.”

Following this, fans began donating to charity instead of sending gifts. In honor of G-Dragon’s birthday on August 18, they donated 8.18 million won. Upon hearing of their gesture, G-Dragon added a zero to the amount and donated 81.8 million won himself, further impressing fans. Ultimately, he went on to establish an anti-drug foundation, earning widespread praise and touching the hearts of many.
The practice of “jogong” (fan gift-giving to idols or celebrities), which ranges from snacks to luxury goods worth millions of won, has long been a subject of controversy. In recent years, more celebrities have begun to publicly reject such gifts. For instance, the fan club manager of girl group GFRIEND stated in an official notice, “All gifts except for handwritten letters and a few items will no longer be accepted.” Most artists under HYBE Labels, including BTS, NU’EST and SEVENTEEN, also participate in this movement, only accepting fan letters.

Other stars such as IU, EXO, SHINee’s Taemin, NCT, Kang Daniel and idols from JYP Entertainment have also opted to reject gifts. It’s not limited to idols either—nation’s MC Yoo Jae-suk also announced via his agency Antenna’s SNS that he will not accept fan gifts, stating, “Words of support are more than enough. Instead of presents, please send heartfelt letters only.” Actress Kim Hee-ae similarly posted on her SNS, “I am always thankful for the overwhelming love and celebration from fans on my birthday. Instead of gifts or flower bouquets, I will gratefully receive your love in my heart. I promise to repay your affection with better projects and acting.”
G-Dragon’s pioneering stance, leading by example with charitable action, continues to inspire fans and fellow celebrities alike.
